Ridding the streets of crime

High density police operation in Brakpan over the weekend saw hot spot areas visited and several offenders arrested.

A man was arrested in Brakpan on Saturday evening after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The man was nabbed during a high-density operation conducted by Brakpan SAPS which took place from 17:00 on Saturday to 02:00 on Sunday.

Local police were assisted by members of the EMPD, Secure Tech Security and CPF patrollers.

“Under the command of Brakpan SAPS station commander Brig Fredl Jonck law enforcement agencies joined hands together in fighting and combating crime in the Brakpan precinct,” said local police spokesperson Capt Pearl van Staad.

The firearm offender, who was travelling in a maroon Honda Ballade with a passenger and an infant, was pulled over at a roadblock at the corner of Koot Street and Heidelberg Road (R23) in Withok Estates at around 20:10.

During a search of the vehicle, a bag was found concealed under the driver’s seat. The bag contained nine live rounds of ammunition and a pistol loaded with six rounds.

The firearm’s serial number was filed off. The man was arrested and detained at the Brakpan Police Station.

His arrest was one of many successes of the day, which saw 16 arrests in total. The operation also saw the raid of suspected drug dens and illegal shebeens.

Patrols also took place at several crime hot spot areas, reducing unlawful incidents in these areas. Other arrests were made for drunk driving, dealing in drugs, possession of drugs, dealing in liquor without a licence and illegal immigrants.

“Three sheebeens were closed, and J534 fines (admission of guilt fines) to the value of R9 000 were issued,” said van Staad.

“Traffic fines valued at R7 500 were issued to those contravening the Road Traffic Act.”

Van Staad told the Herald that 974 people, 427 vehicles and 22 premises were searched during the operation.

“Brig Jonck thanked the members for the support and mentioned that no serious crime was reported during the operation,” she added.
