When runners line up at the Brakpan Sports Centre for their weekly Parkrun on Saturday, this week it will be extra special.
The Brakpan Parkrun Club is celebrating their fourth anniversary.
The club was founded on April 21, 2018. They run around the Bosman and Charl Baard stadiums every week.
Over the years the club has had its fair share of ups and downs. Running legends such as Frith van der Merwe and Bruce Fordyce have visited the club leaving the other runners mesmerised by their presence.
Unfortunately, they have had negative experiences as well.
“The Parkrun currently faces problems with the maintenance and the upkeep of the municipality at the sports grounds, but has obtained the assurance from Mayor Tania Campbell that the upkeep and maintenance will be investigated for rectification,” said Brakpan Parkrun director Dewald Bekker.
The four years of the local Parkrun’s existence have had several milestones celebrated. The club has seen 2 757 participants complete their Saturday morning runs, covering 44 010km.
There have been 1 370 new personal bests by the runners in that time.
