Muriel Brand School athletes smash records

The school's athletes excelled at the Toyota National Championships for the Physically Disabled.

Eighteen new South African records were set by athletes from Muriel Brand School when they participated in the Toyota National Championships for the Physically Disabled.

The championships were held in Germiston last month and the school is exceptionally proud of its athletes, who in addition to setting new national records, also brought home 27 gold, five silver and eight bronze medals.

They also obtained nine fourth-place finishes.

Fifteen athletes from the school attended the Gauteng trials for the championships in 2021 and all qualified as members of the provincial team.

They competed against all other provinces, as well as athletes from Namibia and Lesotho.

The athletes and their results are:
• Chané Brink: silver for discus and shot put, fourth place for javelin
• Sabelo Mahlambi: bronze for shotput, long jump and 100m, and silver for 200m
• Daniel Molobela: gold and SA records for javelin, discus and shotput
• Thato Mthembu: bronze for 100m, gold and SA record for long jump, and fourth place for 200m
• Benno Schoeman: gold and SA record for 100m, and gold for long jump, shot put and discus
• Jacques Schutte: bronze for shotput and javelin, and fourth place for discus
• Kabelo Tsotetsi: fourth place for javelin, bronze for shotput, and gold for discus
• Hlelo Modise: silver for 100m, bronze for discus, and fourth place for shotput
• Nikita Janse van Vuuren: fourth place for 100m, gold for discus and long jump, and bronze for shotput
• Yamkela Ntlanti: gold and SA records for discus, shot put and javelin
• Lionel Hunt: gold and SA records for 100m, 200m and 400m, and gold for long jump
• Teagon Coimbra: gold and SA records for discus, shot put and javelin
• Simphiwe Dlamini: gold for discus, shot put and javelin
• Duncan Theunissen: fourth place for discus and shotput, and silver for javelin
• Kaylyn Payne: gold and SA records for discus, shot put and javelin
