Grave sites disappear in unkempt cemetery

Others have complained that the gates are often locked and they cannot access the cemetery.

Visitors to the Brakpan Cemetery will have a problem locating the gravesites of loved ones due to overgrown grass and weeds – that’s if they can get into the cemetery at all.

In most areas, the grass and weeds are taller than the tombstones and the cemetery resembles a jungle.

The Herald regularly receives complaints from relatives who have loved ones buried in the cemetery about the facility’s unkempt state.

Others have complained that the gates are often locked and they cannot access the cemetery. According to the City of Ekurhuleni, a contractor started work at the cemetery on February 26.

“The delay was caused by funds that were not readily available, and that has since been resolved,” said City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“Because of vandalism, the gates are closed early. We are working with EMPD to deploy security guards on site.”

There was, however, no evidence of any maintenance work being done when the Herald visited the cemetery over the weekend.
