Get your school compliant with environmental health and safety requirements

Schools in the City of Ekurhuleni are encouraged to contact the environmental health offices to have their premises inspected by the City’s environmental health practitioners

The 2022 academic year has started in earnest, and schools in the City of Ekurhuleni are encouraged to contact the environmental health offices to have their premises inspected by the City’s environmental health practitioners (EHPs).

The EHPs inspect school premises to ensure the safety of both learners and school staff. This is to comply with the environmental health and safety requirements.

According to the National Environmental Health Norms and Standards for Premises and Acceptable Monitoring Standards for Environmental Health published in terms of the National Health Act No 61 of 2003, schools should be inspected at least once a year.

The inspections comprise:

• Water quality monitoring
• Compliance with food safety standards for schools handling food
• Waste management
• Compliance of structure with the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act 103 of 1977
• Availability and compliance of toilet and wash-up facilities as per the provisions set out in the National Building Regulations and SANS 10400.

School personnel or members of the governing body may contact the City’s environmental health offices on 011 011 999 2970 or at Nomvula.Sirenqe@ekurhuleni.gov.za to enquire about the services offered or to invite an EHP to conduct an inspection of the school.
