SAPS search for shooters

A case of attempted murder has been opened.

An armed response officer from a local security provider found himself under heavy gunfire on Friday morning after pursuing a vehicle that aroused his suspicion.

The officer, from Secure Tech Security, was on duty in a branded vehicle when at around 11:00 he saw a green Ford Figo along Voortrekker Road.

The officer started following the vehicle after he noticed the occupants were driving recklessly and had skipped two red traffic lights.

“In Cavendish Street, the occupants started shooting at the armed response vehicle,” said Brakpan SAPS spokesperson Capt Pearl van Staad.

“There were four suspects with firearms.”
According to van Staad, one round struck a wheel of the response vehicle, causing damage to the rim.

“After investigation, two empty cartridges were found,” she said.

“It is unknown exactly how many shots were fired.”

She told the Herald the trio task team were on scene and will follow up on all leads. A case of attempted murder has been opened.
