Murder increased from no cases the previous year to six.

Brakpan remains one of the likeliest places for truck drivers to be hijacked, according to the latest crime statistics that were released last Friday. The figures cover the second quarter of the 2021/22 financial year, which is July to September 2021.

Despite a 50% decrease in the number of truck hijackings reported in Brakpan during this time period, the Brakpan Police Station occupies position 20 on the list of top 30 stations nationally for truck hijackings.

It does not feature on any of the other national lists. The full stats for Brakpan are as follows and are compared to the same time period for the previous year:

Contact crimes (crimes against a person)
• Murder increased from no cases the previous year to six.
• Sexual offences decreased from 15 to 14.
• Attempted murder remained the same at six.
• Assault GBH decreased from 19 to 11.
• Common assault increased from 56 to 65.
• Common robbery increased from 11 to 15.
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased from 80 to 74.
• Total contact crimes increased from 187 to 191.

Sexual offences
• Rape increased from eight cases the previous year to nine.
• Sexual assault decreased from seven to four.
• Attempted sexual offences remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Contact sexual offences increased from no cases to one.
• Total sexual offences decreased from 15 to 14.

Some subcategories of aggravated robbery
• Carjacking increased from 16 cases the previous year to 20.
• Robbery at residential premises remained the same at eight.
• Robbery at non-residential premises decreased from 19 to 10.
• Bank robbery remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Robbery of the cash-in-transit vehicle remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Truck hijacking decreased from eight to four.

Contact-related crimes
• Arson remained the same at one.
• Malicious damage to property increased from 39 to 41.
• Total contact-related crimes increased from 40 to 42.

Property-related crimes
• Burglary at non-residential premises decreased from 36 cases the previous year to 31.
• Burglary at residential premises decreased from 62 to 40.
• Theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased from 41 to 29.
• Theft out of or from motor vehicle decreased from 47 to 42.
• Stock theft remained the same in two cases.
• Total property-related crimes decreased from 188 to 144.

Other serious crimes
• All theft not mentioned elsewhere increased from 173 cases the previous year to 176.
• Commercial crime decreased from 73 to 71.
• Shoplifting decreased from 64 to 37.
• Total other serious crimes decreased from 310 to 284.
• Total 17 community reported serious crimes decreased from 725 to 661.

Crime detected as a result of police action
• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased from seven cases the previous year to 21.
• Drug-related crime increased from 72 to 89.
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs decreased from 23 to 18.
• Sexual offences detected as a result of police action remained the same and none were detected.
• Total crime detected as a result of police action increased from 102 to 128.
