Uber driver hijacked

After about three hours, the remaining hijacker received a call instructing him to let the victim go.

An Uber driver was robbed of his white Volkswagen Polo by hijackers masquerading as passengers last Thursday.

According to a report received from Brakpan police, the victim received a request for a ride and picked up two male passengers at the corner of Heidelberg Road (R23) and Springs Road, near Carnival City, just before 19:00.

One of the men climbed in the front with the driver while the other sat in the back. Shortly after driving off, the man in the passenger seat threatened the driver with a gun and demanded his belongings.

He took the driver’s jewellery and cellphone, which he then turned off. The victim was told to drive along the R23 to Tsakani and instructed ‘not to do anything stupid’.

They stopped in Tsakani Extension 11 where they picked up another man, who was also armed with a gun. The driver was forced into the backseat and was driven to a veld in Eden Park, Alberton, where he was forced out of the car.

One of the hijackers stayed to keep a watch over him, while the other two left. After about three hours, the remaining hijacker received a call instructing him to let the victim go.

Police were alerted after the victim sought help at a nearby residential area. The car, which is valued at R150 000, was fitted with a tracking device.

A case of hijacking has been opened.
