Footballers allowed to train

The league was called off in June as there was a rise in Covid-19 cases around the country, especially in Gauteng.

Local football clubs have been given the green light to resume training. This is after President Cyril Ramaphosa recently moved the country to adjusted level three of Covid-19 lockdown.

“Safa has granted permission for clubs to return to training,” read a statement from Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA).

Clubs were allowed to get onto the training grounds on Monday. The ELFA is yet to announce when matches will be played.

The league was called off in June as there was a rise in Covid-19 cases around the country, especially in Gauteng. At the time, many feared the season would be cancelled like in 2020.

“I always believed there is hope,” said Brakpan Spurs manager Jabulani Munene. I told the boys the Covid cases were so high because of winter and that the numbers would drop towards the end of July as it starts to get warmer.”

Munene believes they might be faced with a tight fixture schedule when matches resume.

“Maybe we’ll have to play two games a week to catch up,” he said.

The manager hopes his club will be given sufficient notice of when the games will begin.

“We have to book the stadium seven days in advance as it is difficult to get it on short notice,” he said.

Spurs will resume the season with its u-17 side in a strong position as they have only lost one match this season.
