Children praised for involvement in clean-up of park

What was supposed to be 67 minutes turned out to be two hours and 67 minutes.

Brakpan resident Bernie Teixeira rolled up her sleeves to spread some Mandela Day magic by cleaning up the park along Gordon Street.

“I took my tools across to the park to start my 67 minutes for Mandela Day,” she explained.

“I had barely put down the rubbish bags, rake and brooms when out of the corner of my eye I saw a number of children crossing the road with their mothers to come and assist. Ten minutes later, everyone was sanitised, gloves were put on and each had a rubbish bag.

“We spread out to the four corners of the park, each one with an instruction to pick up paper, plastic and bottles.

“It was not even five minutes later when we were joined by one of our elderly neighbours, and two homeless gentlemen offered to help.”

What was supposed to be 67 minutes turned out to be two hours and 67 minutes.

“To see these children come together raised my spirits. The fact that the community came together made me jump for joy.

“I am so proud of our neighbourhood children who did their very best to assist us in our quest to pay tribute to a South African icon of immense honour and compassion, Nelson Mandela,” added Teixeira.
