Three nabbed in Brakpan for public violence

Some local shops were closed as a precautionary measure.

The unrest, which has gripped parts of the country, spread to Brakpan last night and three men were arrested for public violence.

According to information received from the local SAPS, Kwa-Thema Square, a shopping centre situated along 12th Road in Maryvlei, fell victim to looters.

Police were called to the centre at 18:50 and were greeted by scenes of chaos with people fleeing with stolen goods.

Officers then came under attack from the looters, who threw projectiles, including bottles, at them.

Shots were fired to disperse the crowd and officers managed to apprehend two occupants of a silver Toyota Conquest.

The men were leaving the centre when police noticed the vehicle was loaded with suspected stolen items.

The pair was arrested and the goods and vehicle were seized.

In another incident at the shopping centre at 20:00, police arrested a man after he was spotted fleeing into the surrounding bushes with a suspected stolen microwave.

Unable to provide proof of purchase for the appliance, the man was detained.

A case of malicious damage to property was also opened after the driver of a Toyota Corolla was pelted with stones while passing the shopping centre at around 18:30.

His vehicle suffered damages estimated at R20 000 and included a broken windscreen, driver’s side window and rear bumper.

Police confirmed to the Herald this morning (Tuesday) that no incidents were reported in the CBD or suburbs.

Some local shops were closed as a precautionary measure.

In addition to a heavy police presence, local security companies and community safety groups were also on patrol.
