Unknown future for old mall

The Herald last week reported that vacant and vandalised buildings at the old Brakpan Mall had been demolished (‘Eyesore demolished’).
The demolition was welcomed by residents and business owners in the area, who were concerned about vandals and thieves wrecking and stripping vacant shops.
According to information received from the City of Ekurhuleni, the owners of the buildings complied with legislation after a contravention notice was issued.
Asked if all the buildings in the mall will be demolished, City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed that only the dilapidated structures have been demolished.
“We cannot confirm any future plans at this moment, however, we are awaiting the owners’ plan going forward,” he said.
