Hospital Road blocked as protesters burn tyres

There were also reports of protestors throwing stones at passing vehicles.

A protest erupted in Brakpan this morning (Wednesday) as residents of the Location Road informal settlement took to the streets.

The intersection of Hospital Road and Location Road has been barricaded with rocks and burning tyres by residents of the settlement.

There were also reports of protestors throwing stones at passing vehicles.

DA councillor for Ward 97 Brandon Pretorius told the Herald he was alerted to the protest at around 4am.

“I immediately went to the scene to confirm the information received. Upon my arrival, I was confronted by the protesters,” he said.

According to Pretorius, the protest action is a result of ‘broken promises’.

“On April 18, the MMC for human settlements, Lesiba Mpya, had a public meeting with the occupants of the settlement and made commitments and promises that were obviously not kept,” he said.

“This, according to the information I received, is what sparked the protest action.

“I do not for one second condone the action of the protesters.”

Brakpan SAPS and the EMPD are on the scene.

Comment has been requested from the City of Ekurhuleni regarding the meeting between residents and Mpya.
