Spurs kick off in style

Tshepo Masilela was the star on the day.

Brakpan Spurs started their 2021 Easterns Local Football Association season with a top-class win over Bedfordview at the Brakpan Sports Grounds on Saturday.

Spurs had not played a match since 2019 and most of their players were donning the team’s colours for the first time.

Only four players on the side were part of the squad two years ago, while the rest were making their debuts for the local club.

This did not stop them from giving their opponents a football lesson as they emerged 4-1 winners on the day.

With new captain Sidumo Munene playing despite having an injury, the locals were determined to start the season on a high.

Tshepo Masilela was the star on the day. He started in style as he chipped the Bedfordview goalkeeper to open the scoring within 15 minutes of the opening whistle.

Striker Thulani Munene doubled the scoring not too long after that.

The teams went into half-time, with the hosts leading 2-0.

The second half saw Spurs picking up where they left off, with Masilela doubling up his tally to make it 3-0.

The visitors did look to fight back and managed to score.

Any chance of Bedfordview pulling off a comeback, however, was quickly forgotten when Masilela rounded off his hat trick to give his side a 4-1 win.

Despite the club having many new faces, there seems to be a lot of confidence among the Spurs players.

“With the new team, new captain Sidumo Munene, and a new player/coach Dumisani Msiza, I believe we’ll do great this season,” said Spurs player/manager Jabulani Munene.

The club’s new player/coach Msiza is credited for his running of the training sessions and words of encouragement at half-time.

The goalkeeper has played at a high level, as he used to play for the Bidvest Wits’ MultiChoice Diski Challenge side.
