Broken down truck robbed of cargo

The driver was instructed to lie on the ground and his hands were tied with shoelaces.

Four men fled with two truck trailers of copper valued at hundreds of thousands of rands on Sunday.

This is after the truck transporting the load broke down in Withok Estates.

According to information received from Brakpan police, the driver of the truck pulled over at the corner of Heidelberg Road (R23) and Koot Street at around 4pm after experiencing a break-down.

He got out of the truck to inform his colleague, who had been travelling behind him.

While waiting for a mechanic to arrive from Petit in Benoni, a white Toyota Venture stopped on the side of the road.

Four men alighted the vehicle and approached the driver and his colleague.

They were threatened with a knife and told they would be stabbed if they didn’t cooperate.

The driver was instructed to lie on the ground and his hands were tied with shoelaces.

He was separated from his colleague and taken to a secluded area, where one of the men kept a watch over him.

The other men later returned and the driver was released by his captors at around 5am the following morning after they received a phone call.

The driver was untied and told to wait 15 minutes before leaving.

When he returned to the truck, he found the two trailers and their cargo of copper had been taken.
A case of truck hijacking is under investigation.
