Cop allegedly shot by motorist at petrol station

When the officers approached them, the men got into the car and drove off.

A 36-year-old man was arrested during the early hours of Saturday morning following the shooting of a police officer in Brakpan.

Const Brian Mathebula, who is attached to the Crime Intelligence Unit in Germiston, sustained a gunshot wound to the upper leg after he and a colleague stopped to buy food at a petrol station in Rand Collieries.

According to information received from Brakpan police, the law enforcers pulled into the petrol station along Springs Road at around 1.45am and noticed two men allegedly drinking liquor and dancing near a parked white Toyota RunX.

When the officers approached them, the men got into the car and drove off.

As the RunX pulled away, three shots were fired in the officers’ direction, one of which struck Mathebula in the leg.
The driver of the RunX was arrested after he was involved in an accident at the corner of Springs and Farquharson roads shortly thereafter.

Police recovered a firearm at the scene.

Mathebula was taken to the Life Dalview Hospital and was later discharged. The apprehended man is facing an attempted murder charge.
