Dube still a star

The local man has shown that he is a force to be reckoned with on the golf course despite not having a lot of time to work on his game.

There are not a lot of things that can encourage a sportsperson more than knowing that the person who mentors them knows what it is like to win.

Youngsters at the Kenneth Dube Golf Academy at Royal Oak Country Club know how this feels.
Dube showed that he is still a top player when he recently won the Senior Sunshine Tour Qualifying School at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.

The man who manages the Royal Oak Golf Club and runs an academy there won by a comfortable four strokes to book his place onto the senior tour which will start in Centurion on February 15.

“I enjoyed it. It was a good time playing against the seniors,” said the 50-year-old Dube.

The local man has shown that he is a force to be reckoned with on the golf course despite not having a lot of time to work on his game.
“You know I run a golf club where I have to make sure the course is good and the greens stay lush while also making sure that the members of the club are comfortable. On top of that I coach the youngsters,” he said.

“I play mainly with some of the members and that can often only be once a week. It feels good to be able to win against players who play every day.“I just do my best as I only play part-time.”
Dube, a long-time professional golfer, still harbours dreams of playing on the European tour while he still plays on the main Sunshine Tour.
“The plan was to play on the European tour but Covid-19 has made it difficult to play internationally,” said Dube.
“Hopefully the vaccine will help make it possible to travel later in the year.”
So how have his students taken his performances?
“They are really motivated as they are seeing their coach do well. It makes them want to play better,” he said.
