Possible Flooding: Ekurhuleni DEMS on high alert

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has forecast persistent rains in Gauteng for today.

The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) teams are on high alert for flooding as more rain is expected to hit Gauteng province today.

According to the metro, the persistent rainfall is due to a tropical depression, and may cause flooding in low-lying areas.

“The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) is on high alert monitoring the situation as it unfolds, and ready for any eventuality that might negatively affect residents. The City has also mobilised its emergency aid resources,” said metro spokesperson, Solly Mashabela.

The metro cautions residents to consider personal safety, pets` safety, livestock and safety of their personal belongings and properties.

“Wet, rainy conditions contribute to unsafe driving conditions, and we therefore warn motorists and pedestrians to be vigilant of the slippery roads and low-lying bridges that may be flooded. As the City, we also urges residents to keep an eye on children not to wander far from their residences to try and avoid the risk of drowning or being swept away by flooded streams,” said Mashabela.
