Nasrec field hospital operational with sufficient space

The public is advised not to arrive at the facility without making prior arrangements

The Nasrec field hospital is still operational and has sufficient space and staff to accommodate Covid-19 patients.

The spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health, Kwara Kekana, confirmed the hospital has adequate staffing with over 400 oxygen capacity beds, 380 piped and 30 cylinders.

The referral criteria and process for admission differs between “Quarantine and Isolation” and the “Intermediate Care Facilty” beds:

Quarantine and Isolation (Q & I) beds admission criteria

• Confirmed Covid-19 positive, those awaiting results and close contacts

• Able to maintain SpO2 of >93 per cent on room air

• Non-pregnant females

• Clinically stable or improving

• Able to get out of bed and walk to bathroom with minimal assistance (if you can use walker, you can be accepted)

• Normal level of consciousness

• No psychiatric disturbance

• No intravenous lines or need for intravenous medication or fluids

• No requirement for additional blood tests

• No requirement for advanced nursing care (e.g. wound care, assistance with personal hygiene, intake/output monitoring, etc.)

• All patients must be transferred with all acute and chronic medications (bring your own existing chronic medication)

Intermediate care facility (ICF) patients requiring oxygen admission criteria:

• Confirmed Covid-19 positive

• Able to maintain SpO2 of >90 per cent, requiring not more that 10L oxygen by nasal prong or mask

• Non-pregnant adult women

• Clinically stable or improving

• Able to get out of bed and walk to bathroom with minimal assistance (patients who can get to the bathroom with a walker and oxygen cylinder are accepted)

• Normal level of consciousness

• No psychiatric disturbance

• No intravenous lines or need for intravenous medications or fluids

• No requirement for additional blood test

• No requirements for advance nursing care (e.g. wound care, input/output monitoring, etc.)

Note – patients with high blood sugar can be accepted as long as they are not acidotic or dehydrated. Referrals are pre-arranged on 066 422 6289 or 060 722 3739.

Pre-arrangements

• Make transportation arrangements for the residents to reach the Nasrec field hospital.

• Patients to come with two weeks’ supply of comfortable clothing, if possible.

• Nasrec quarantine and isolation is only for those who are not able to quarantine or isolate at home.

• Do not go to Nasrec without making arrangements with the facility.
