Protect yourself from online scammers
Criminals use every trick in the book to scam people.
While shopping online may be easy, convenient and quick, especially if you are avoiding those long queues or overcrowded malls, it is not always safe.
Let’s start with the basics. Always remember to keep your devices clean and virus-free before browsing the internet.
You should not share your personal information with anyone, never click on unknown links and verify sites before using them.
Most trusted sites have the secure socket layer installed on top of the page, check your spellings before continuing about your business and rather use well-known sites.
Safety guides for when doing internet banking:
• Nedbank is advising online users to install the free online fraud protection software trustee Rapport.
• Report suspicious links to phishing@nedbank.co.za, and be careful of fake calls using number masking software to impersonate their numbers.
• Capitec is also warning users to ignore messages asking users to turn off their phones or make changes to their SIM or cellphone as part of a service upgrade.
• Users can also report stolen phones on 086 010 2043.
Take note of sites offering discounted prices or offers that sound too good to be true. When in doubt, listen to your gut feeling.
