EMPD clamps down on speeding motorists in Brakpan

The motorists were detained at the Brakpan Police Station and face charges of reckless and negligent driving.

The EMPD Speed Enforcement Unit arrested six drivers in Brakpan on Thursday evening during an anti-excessive speeding operation.

From 6.30pm to 8pm along the R554 between Afrikaner Street and Heidelberg Road (R23), which is a 70km/h zone, three motorists were stopped and apprehended.

“At 7.44pm, a 37-year old male in a Volkswagen Polo hatchback was caught doing 126km/h, citing he was rushing to visit his admitted girlfriend in one of the Johannesburg public hospitals,” said EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

“The other two lawbreakers, a male and a female, were also nabbed.”

Meanwhile, between 9pm and 11pm on the R23 from New Kleinfontein Road to Kaapmaiden Avenue, three drivers were arrested for disobeying the displayed 80km/h speed limit sign.

“At 10.45pm, a 48-year-old female driving a Haval SUV, without any reason for exceeding the speed limit, was caught clocking 136km/h,” said Mokheseng.

“The remaining two male speedsters were caught doing 122km/h and 130km/h respectively, and alleged they were rushing to close shops and pick up their children from day care.”

The motorists were detained at the Brakpan Police Station and face charges of reckless and negligent driving.
