Challenge now open to all

The last 10 years have seen the cycle ride raise R5-million for the Mr Price Foundation, which helps 77 818 learners in 98 schools across South Africa through its holistic schools programme.

Over the last 10 years a small group of cyclists have taken on the gruelling 606km ride from Secunda to Durban in the Challenge with Purpose fund-raiser to help fight poverty.

This year the sponsors of the event, Mr Price, has partnered with the Comrades Marathon and have made the event virtual and open for all runners and cyclists.

This means everyone can take part from wherever they are.

The organisers are encouraging everyone to take part in the event which will take place on December 5 and 6.

Participants can run or cycle any distance between 3km and 606km.

“This is the first time the event will be open to the general public for participation. You and your family and friends can help us make this the biggest virtual sporting event in South Africa, or even the world,” said Karen Wells, head of the Mr Price Foundation.

The Challenge with Purpose event has seen cyclists raise R5-million over the last 10 years as they rode from Durban to Secunda. This year’s fund-raiser will be virtual and open to everyone to take part.

“For the past decade, the annual Ride with Purpose was open to a small, limited number of cyclists due to the intensity and distance of 606 km, over two days, from Secunda to Durban. Now anyone who wants to help make a difference can take part,” she added.

The last 10 years have seen the cycle ride raise R5-million for the Mr Price Foundation, which helps 77 818 learners in 98 schools across South Africa through its holistic schools programme.

The event is said to also raise funds to train unemployed youth for the world of retail and supply through skills development programme, Jump Start.

“I am very excited about this inaugural event, which is hosted in partnership with the Comrades Marathon Association. The event, by nature of it being virtual as well as incorporating running, is far more inclusive and creates an even greater opportunity for participation and fund-raising from across the globe,” shared Mark Blair, CEO of the Mr Price Group.

“The funds raised will contribute to the foundation’s education and skills development programmes, which have already made a difference to many lives in South Africa.”
