Local photographer shines a light on Africa’s natural beauty

Bic received thousands of submissions, 35 artworks were chosen to help bring this truly African range of pocket lighters to life.

Bic recently launched an exciting, all-new pocket lighter range, inspired and designed by Africans, for Africa.

The Afrilights collection showcases the incredible beauty of the continent with local relevance, brand love and creativity in mind.

To get South Africans involved in creating a one-of-a-kind lighter range, Bic invited the public to submit their inspiring images of Africa.

Although Bic received thousands of submissions, 35 artworks were chosen to help bring this truly African range of pocket lighters to life.

The winners are a diverse group of South Africans who all have one thing in common – a love for Africa.

They come from all walks of life and creative backgrounds, all lending their unique vision on what African beauty means to them.

Brakpan resident Henno Pitzer, one of the most prolific winners, entered for the chance to contribute and share some of his inspiring work.

Pitzer submitted nine images in total, covering birdlife and wildlife and even the incomparable Jozi-skyline sunset.

“All of my images were inspired by my passion for the preservation of our natural parks and reserves,” he said.

“Every single image is truly unique. The interactive online approach of this competition intrigued me, and the composition and layout of the lighter also complement the image.

“Africa is a part of me as much as I am part of Africa. I am in awe of the beautiful diversity I encounter every day – the wildlife the people, and the landscapes.”

While photography is a passion of his, Pitzer is a herbalist by trade, focusing on a healthier approach to modern medicine.

“I try to involve my family in my photography as well, although the peace and tranquility help with the stress levels of our Western world,” he said.

“I also involve myself in landscaping and corporate garden maintenance.”

Pitzer acknowledges that being a part of the Afrilights campaign has been a humbling experience.

“To be part of something that is driven with so much enthusiasm, for a brand of this magnitude, and to get recognition for something I love to do has made me extremely proud,” he said.

“The celebration of our continent with all it has to offer, on a platform where it will reach so many individuals, both locally and abroad, is magnificent.”

He notes the passion of our people is what truly makes Africa special.

His advice for aspiring photographers or creatives is to stop, take one step back, open your eyes and listen carefully.
“Africa will speak to you,” he said.
