Shopping locally helps create more jobs

Darrel Smith believes supporting local businesses helps create a stable and safe environment.

A long-standing member of the Brakpan business community, Darrel Smith first brought the taste of Kentucky Fried Chicken to Brakpan more than 40 years ago. He believes supporting local businesses helps create a stable and safe environment.

How long have you had your business in Brakpan?
I opened KFC Brakpan at 455 Prince George Avenue in October 1976 and then KFC Dalpark, at the Mall@Carnival in October 2005.

• To what do you attribute your success?
By making sure the food quality and service is always 100 per cent to standard and team members attend to customers politely and with a smile, as well as keeping the condition of the outlets always super clean and well maintained

KFC Brakpan store has its own delivery service, as well as both stores using Mr Delivery and Uber Eats for convenience

How important is it that residents support local businesses?

It is of utmost importance for residents in the area to support local business as this maintains the profitable running of the business that would then remain open to create jobs.

This creates a stable and safe environment in the town that allows the businesses to remain active and running, which in turn will stabilise any decay or security issues.

If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

My advise is to be consistent and to surround yourself with positive, honest, respectful people and friends.

How do you stay positive?

To stay positive in business today is to be consistent with everything and to always be thankful and to recognise your team or workforce which in turn creates a positive happy workforce.
