Hundreds arrested over weekend for driving under the influence

The EMPD has warned motorists that this is an ongoing operation.

Five-hundred and nine drivers found to have taken one glass too many landed up behind bars in Ekurhuleni between last Thursday and Sunday.

EMPD precinct officers from the south, north and eastern regions, including the Social Crime Prevention Units with Specialised Services, conducted roving and static roadblocks over the semi-long weekend.

In the eastern region, which is made up of Brakpan, Springs, Tsakani, Nigel, Etwatwa, Kwa-Thema and Daveyton, 54 motorists were nabbed and taken to the relevant police stations.

In the southern region of the city (Alberton, Boksburg, north and south of Germiston, Thokoza, Vosloorus and Zonkizizwe), 386 arrests were made.

Sixty-nine motorists were apprehended in the northern region, which comprises Edenvale, Kempton Park, Sebenza, Thembisa and Olifantsfontein.

All the arrestees are expected to appear in the respective magistrate’s courts soon.
