Vagrants started fire at stadium

Vagrants started the fire from outside the perimeter fence of the sports facility.

The fire that burned the fields at the Brakpan Sports Grounds was started outside the stadium according to the City of Ekurhuleni.

Council was responding to a story in last week’s edition of the Herald, ‘Football fields set alight’ in which it was reported that the fields at the Charl Baard Stadium had been burned.

“The department is aware that the grass at the Brakpan sports grounds (Charl Baard stadium) was burnt,” reads a statement issued by Ekurhuleni’s divisional head of communications and media relations, Nhlanhla Cebekhulu.

“Vagrants started the fire from outside the perimeter fence of the sports facility.

“Fortunately, this fire did not damage municipal assets with the exception of the old unused slashers which were slightly burnt.

“The departmental staff near the facility contacted fire services to extinguish it.”

With the 2020 football season having been cancelled, clubs that use the grounds will hope this does not happen again.

Clubs such as Brakpan Spurs and Dolphins play at the stadium and did not seem happy about the incident.

“With things like this happening we are concerned. How will we be able to play?” asked Spurs’ captain Jabulani Munemo.

Munemo hopes the grounds will be ready in February 2021 when the new Brakpan local league is due to starts as it is likely that more clubs will be using the stadium.
