Quarterly crime stats reveal surge in murders in Brakpan

The statistics are for crimes that occurred from April 1 to the end of June this year.

Police minister Bheki Cele released the crime stats on a quarterly basis for the first time on Friday afternoon.

The lockdown saw an overall drop in crime and violence throughout the country.

Brakpan saw a major decline in most crimes when compared to the prior year’s figures; however, there was an increase in murder and sexual assault cases.

The full statistics are as follows:

Contact crimes (crimes against a person):

Murder increased from two cases the previous year to four. This is an increase of 200 per cent.

Sexual offences decreased from 15 to 14.

Attempted murder increased from four to five.

Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm decreased from 20 to 19.

Common assault decreased from 56 to 44.

Common robbery remained the same at 12.

Robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased from 77 to 47.

Sexual offences:

Rape decreased from 13 cases the previous year to six.

Sexual assault increased from two to seven. This is an increase of 250 per cent.

Attempted sexual offences remained the same and no cases were reported.

Contact sexual offences increased from no cases to one.

Subcategories of aggravated robbery:

Carjacking decreased from 16 cases the previous year to nine.

Robbery at residential premises decreased from 10 to one.

Robbery at non-residential premises decreased from 23 to 12.

Bank robbery remained the same and no cases were reported.

Robbery of cash-in-transit vehicles remained the same and no cases were reported.

Truck hijacking decreased from three cases to none.

Contact-related crimes:

Arson remained the same and no cases were reported.

Malicious damage to property decreased from 43 cases the previous year to 24.

Property-related crimes:

Burglary at non-residential premises remained the same and 29 cases were reported.

Burglary at residential premises decreased from 135 cases the previous year to 33.

Theft of motor vehicle and motor cycle decreased from 48 to 23.

Theft out of or from motor vehicle decreased from 45 to 34.

Stock theft remained the same and two cases were reported.

Other serious crimes:

All theft not mentioned elsewhere decreased from 168 cases the previous year to 139.

Commercial crime decreased from 73 to 48.

Shoplifting decreased from 67 to 51.

Crime detected as a result of police action:

Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition decreased from 18 cases the previous year to four.

Drug-related crime decreased from 104 to 66.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs decreased from 49 to five.

Sexual offences detected as a result of police action remained the same and no cases were reported.
