Suspected hijackers arrested with assistance of community

The Benoni Flying Squad thanked the Brakpan community for the role they played in the apprehension of the hijacking suspects.

Two suspected hijackers were arrested in Brakpan by the Benoni Flying Squad on Friday.

Members responded to a report of a hijacking in progress in the Dalpark area and were put in contact with someone following the hijackers.

This resulted in the arrest of two suspects along Devon Road in Dalview and the recovery of the hijacked brown Audi A4, which was abandoned in Van der Walt Street.

“An unlicensed 9mm Norinco pistol with the serial number filed off and one live round of ammunition were also recovered,” said Benoni Flying Squad communication officer WO Grant Giblin.

The squad also arrested two people in Brakpan for possession of drugs.

The arrests were made in Wenden Avenue and Queen Street.

Heroin and mandrax were confiscated.

In other successes over the weekend, the Benoni Flying Squad arrested a further nine people and recovered two abandoned vehicles.

Three were apprehended in Benoni on Friday for stealing bank cards and withdrawing money from their victims’ bank accounts.

They were arrested along Bunyan and Park streets and found in possession of stolen bank cards and R2 900 in cash.

The maroon Mazda 2 used in the commission of the offence was also impounded.

On Saturday, members followed up information which led to the arrest of three people in Selection Park, Springs, when they were found in possession of cellphone tower batteries suspected to be stolen.

The white Toyota Corolla they were travelling in was also impounded.

On Sunday three more were arrested after being found in possession of drugs at the corner of Van Riebeeck and Pienaar streets in Kempton Park, and Meyer Street in Actonville, Benoni.

Dagga and mandrax were confiscated.

In further policing, two abandoned vehicles were recovered, a red Volkswagen Polo reported hijacked on a Rabie Ridge case and a blue Toyota Etios reported stolen on a Brits case.

Investigation continues in all the cases and the Benoni Flying Squad thanked the Brakpan community for the role they played in the apprehension of the hijacking suspects.

The suspects aged between 25 to 47 will be appearing in the local magistrate’s courts facing charges of dealing in drugs, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
