Services available in the Ekurhuleni metro during lockdown

Taxis are, however, permitted to transport essential service workers and consumers to shops, under strict control measures that observe social distancing.

The following services in the Ekurhuleni metro will be available during the national Covid-19 lockdown:

• All 93 clinics in the metro will remain operational throughout the duration of the lockdown with business hours being from 8am to 4.30pm.

• Six teams have been established to undergo contact tracing of citizens who have potentially contracted Covid-19.

Each team will consist of Environmental Health Practitioners, doctors, professional nurses, surveillance officers and health promoters.

• The following clinics will be operating 24/7: KwaThema Community Health Centre, Nokuthela Ngwenya Community Health Centre, Phillip Moyo Community Health Centre, Esangweni Community Health Centre Ethafeni, Midwife Obstetric Unit Jabulane Dumane Community Health Centre, Pholapark Community Health Centre and Ramokonopi Community Health Centre.

• Two sites have been identified as quarantine sites for Covid-19 cases within the metro.

• The metro will continue to keep the lights on through consistent electricity supply.

In cases of any unplanned power failures such as cable faults and cable theft, a team of competent technicians remains ready to respond to any type of power outage.

Energy infrastructure maintenance will continue during the lockdown and for any energy supply challenges residents can contact the customer service centre on 086 054 3000 or visit the metro’s social media pages.

• The metro will provide reliable water supply including the provision of water tanks and Jojo tanks in informal settlements.

Water and sanitation services will continue throughout the metro, with quality testing of water as well as discharge quality control within the metro.

Should residents experience pipe bursts and water leakage, a dedicated team of call centre agents and technicians can be contacted on the customer care call centre number.

• Waste collection machinery will continue to provide services according to the approved calendar.

Should waste removal services be interrupted on a scheduled day, residents should be assured that it will be collected the next day.

Waste collectors demanding money and gifts should be reported to the fraud and corruption hotline on 0800 1102 201.

• Cemeteries will be opened to help families bury their loved ones with respect and dignity.

The metro will, however, limit burials to 10 per day to ensure that social distancing protocols are observed.

Burial bookings will be spread across seven days of the week in order to avoid weekend congestion.

In order to enforce social distancing as regulated under the National Disaster Act, graves will be allocated in a scattered manner to avoid compound gathering of different processions.

The supply of hand sanitiser, masks and gloves for mourners will be the responsibility of the undertakers and funerals will be limited to only 50 people.

• The metro’s men and women will be in your area 24/7 to ensure not only adherence to the lockdown regulations, but also attend any opportunistic crime during this period.

• The Disaster Management and Emergency Services, including fire and ambulance personnel, and all supporting and essential services will continue delivering lifesaving services during the duration of the lockdown and are responsible for monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the 21 day lockdown as directed by the president.

• Bus services in the metro have been suspended during the lockdown and will resume once the lockdown has been lifted.

• Should residents require assistance in any of the metro’s services a team of professional call centre agents are on standby to take calls.

In the wake of misinformation perpetuated by fake news phenomenon the metro is encouraging residents to get accurate information from the metro’s website www.ekurhuleni.gov.za or other sources of credible information such as the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) as well as the national and provincial departments of health.
