Increase the lifespan of your washing machine

Here are some things you can do to keep your washing machine in good shape for years to come.

We’re talking about all those fantastic appliances that make our lives so much easier and hassle free.

The dishwasher, the washing machine, tumble drier, vacuum cleaner all play a part in making our lives happier, and we need to look after them.

To help you get to know your washing machine’s likes and dislikes better, the national head of Hirsch’s Service Division, Lallie Maharaj, shared advice on how to take care of these super machines to help extend their lifespan.

“A washer has to be washed! How ironic is that? To prevent foul smells and mildew and mould from developing, regular maintenance is essential. Here are some things you can do to keep it in good shape for years to come,”explained Maharaj.

The outside of the machine must be wiped regularly, preferably with a mild detergent.
The soap dish, which can be removed (check you manual), must to be washed regularly.
Modern machines use less water, so using the right detergent and correct amount is very important. Never add an extra half a scoop for good measure or under dose – follow the manufacturer’s directions.
Dilute the correct quantity of stay soft required to prevent clogging up the pipes.
Run the washer through a full cycle (hot wash) empty, every month or two, add 2 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda into the soap dispenser and two cups of vinegar into the washer.
Clean behind the washing machine, inspect the hoses and clean filters regularly.
Never overload your machine.
Use equal parts of vinegar and water to wipe the door rubber.
Leave the door slightly ajar after every wash.
