Tip-off yields success

Police also seized equipment used in the illegal operation.

Nine illegal immigrants were arrested in Withok Estates on Tuesday, last week, on charges of contravening the Precious Metals Act.

SAPS members from the Crime Intelligence and Organised Crime units received a tip-off about illegal activities on a stretch of land in the area.

“On arrival at the plot, they found nine illegal immigrants working and processing iron minerals on-site,” said Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS.

Police also seized equipment used in the illegal operation, including pendukas,  steel pots, bags of refined sand and iron balls (used for grinding).

All suspects, ranging in age from 20 to 45, were detained at the Brakpan Police Station.

Brakpan SAPS station commander Brig Fredl Jonck stated the operation is a continuation of constant raids, which are part of Operation O Kae Molao (Where’s The Law?).
