How to live off the grid

For those who are frustrated dealing with load-shedding, going off the grid may be the solution for you.

Here are some ways to go off the grid.

Grey water

Instead of using clean water to water the gardens or flush the toilet, you could use the leftover water from washing clothes or showering.

Rainwater

In addition to grey water, rainwater could vastly help with the reduction of costs.

Even though rainwater could be contaminated, it could be very effective for the use of the other daily functions, such as laundry, gardening, or toilet uses.

Gas

Bottled gas is an affordable option, and relatively simple to implement.

A gas-powered geyser will go a long way toward freeing you from dependence on the grid.

Geysers usually consume about 60 per cent of household electricity, and as such, are the first port of call for homeowners seeking to improve energy efficiency.

Gas-powered stoves are another helpful and affordable addition, making it possible for you to cook food and boil water without fear of load-shedding.

Solar panels

Solar energy is the most renewable energy source we have, and it’s free.

Generating your own electricity means that you will be using less from the utility supplier.

This will immediately translate to savings on your energy bill.

Battery power

One of the keys to going off the grid is a battery storage unit.

Newer battery types have been able to push the limits to improve storage for longer periods as well as stand up to more recharges before running out of steam.

Implementing some of these technologies will not only benefit your electricity bill but ensure you have electricity during load shedding,
