How to report noise complaints

Residents are urged to report noise complaints by contacting the call centre on 0860 543 000.

Living near a tavern can be trying as you might have to deal with the noise from its patrons or live entertainment.

Kobeli Mokheseng, acting chief superintendent and spokesperson for the EMPD, said that residents can report noise complaints at any time during the day or night.

Residents are urged to report noise complaints by contacting the call centre on 0860 543 000.

“The complainant will then receive a reference number as proof of lodging their complaint,” Mokheseng said.

“EMPD officers will then be deployed to the area and give the owner/person in charge a verbal warning to reduce the noise.”

He added officers will then stay within the area and return to the tavern after an hour.

“Should the noise persist the owner/person in charge will then receive a written warning.

“The officers will then again remain within the area and visit the tavern after another hour.”

Mokheseng said that if the owner/person in charge has not heeded their warnings they will then bring in the SAPS as well as engineers who specialise in measuring noise.

“Should the noise be above a certain decibel we will then remove any sound equipment or instruments (should there be a live band),” he explained.

“The equipment will then be stored with the EMPD and the owner will need to bring proof of ownership and pay a storage fee and fine for the noise complaint.”
