Don’t stop if you suspect you’re being pulled over by bogus cops

Van Staad advised motorists to be vigilant.

Brakpan police have again warned drivers to be on the lookout for hijackers masquerading as traffic officers.

The hijackers are especially active along the R23 (Heidelberg Road), but cases have been reported in other areas.

According to Brakpan SAPS spokesperson Capt Pearl van Staad, the hijackers are dressed in EMPD uniforms and are travelling in unmarked vehicles with blue lights.

Two of these vehicles have been identified as a white Volkswagen Polo and a Ford Ranger bakkie.

She explained several cases have recently been reported.

It was reported in last week’s edition of the Herald, ‘Weekend crime’ (February 7) how bogus traffic officers hijacked the driver of a truck transporting meat to Cape Town.

The victim was pulled over along Denne Road in Witpoort by a woman and a man dressed in EMPD uniforms at around 11am.

They were travelling in an unmarked white double cab bakkie.

The victim was asked for his licence, which he gave to the woman.

He was then threatened with a firearm by the other ‘officer’ and forced into a blue Nissan Tiida, which was parked on the side of the road.

The victim was driven to Boksburg, where he was let go in Dawn Park.

Van Staad advised motorists to be vigilant.

“If you suspect you are being pulled over by bogus officers, acknowledge that you have seen them and indicate that they should follow you,” she said.

“Put your hazards on and drive to the nearest police station or public place.”
