Weekend crime round-up

According to information received, the following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the weekend:

• Friday – A Leachville man died after being shot as he arrived at his Blyde Avenue home during the early hours of the morning.

The victim’s wife was awakened by the sound of gunshots inside the yard at around 2.45am and went outside to investigate.

She found her injured husband, who had just returned from work, in the garage.

Police information reveals the man, who was bleeding from his thighs, was lying next to his vehicle — a silver grey Volkswagen Polo.

One cartridge was found next to him.

The victim was still breathing when police arrived on the scene, but shortly after 4am he was declared dead by paramedics.

The motive for the shooting is unknown and a case of murder is under investigation.

* A man was robbed of his bank card and cellphone by two men at the corner of Prince George Avenue and Voortrekker Road.

The incident took place around 5.40pm.

The victim was in line to withdraw cash at an ATM and waited for the two men in front of him to conclude their transaction.

They walked away from the ATM and the victim proceeded to withdraw cash.

As he inserted his bank card, the two men returned to the ATM and accused the victim of stealing their bank card.

He was assaulted and robbed of his belongings.

* Three men robbed a fast food eatery along 12th Road in Maryvlei.

The trio held staff at gunpoint around 9pm and fled with a large sum of cash.

* A gambling business was robbed by a gang of six men.

The men entered the premises, situated at the corner of Queen Avenue and Park Street, at about 11.30pm.

They held a cashier at gunpoint and demanded cash.

They made off with money and the cashier’s jewellery and cellphone.

* A home in Pine Avenue, Leachville, was burgled of a TV, an amplifier and other valuables.

• Saturday – Car batteries were stolen from two vehicles parked at an address along Elliot Street in Anzac.

* Two security guards were robbed of their personal belongings while on duty at an address along Heidelberg Road (R23), near Dalpark.

Three men, one of whom was armed with a gun, confronted the victims in the guardroom at about 12.55am.

The robbers demanded firearms and forced the victims to lie on the floor.

They were searched and robbed of cash and cellphones.

* A murder case was opened after a man was found dead at an address along Wenden Avenue.

Police were called to the home at about 8am.

The deceased, who has been identified, sustained injuries to his head and face.

No further information was provided.

* A home in Afrikaner Road Dalview, was broken into.

TVs, a DVD player, a laptop, jewellery and other household items were stolen.

• Sunday – No priority cases were reported at the time of publication.
