News of yesteryear

These were some of the local stories making headlines in years gone by.

This week we look back at the Herald of October 20, 2006:

• Brakpan Primary is top environmental school

It was the first school in Gauteng to be awarded Eco-School status in 2004, and Brakpan Primary School again proved its committed to conservation and looking after the environment when it excelled at the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Environmental Schools Conference.

The metro hosted the conference at Emperors Palace on Friday, last week, and Brakpan Primary was one of 18 schools that participated.

Twenty learners from the school were given the task of investigating issues pertaining to waste and recycling and/or water for growth and development.

At the event they presented workshops on the topics they had researched and displayed examples of their work on environmental issues.

Brakpan Primary School was awarded a first prize of R5 000 for its waste management audit and R3 000 for second place in the water for growth and development category.

All solid waste, such as paper, cans and glass is recycled at the school.

“In the audit on waste management, we focused on what we call the versatile two-litre plastic bottle,” said Brakpan Primary School principal Toeks le Roux.

“Instead of throwing the bottle away, it can be used as a bird-feeder, a ball catcher, a sweet container or even a piggy-bank.

“We also demonstrated that a kite can be made from old newspapers and a used tea bag can serve as a firelighter.

“All of this is part of the school’s curriculum.”

• Voet is by skrootwerf ontdek

• Ambulance driver kills two

An Ekurhuleni paramedic is facing a charge of culpable homicide, after she recently knocked down and killed two of four people in Tsakane.

According to reports, the woman driver and a colleague were returning from the Pholosong Hospital, en route to Springs at about 10am, when she lost control of the ambulance near the Tsakane Police Station.

A woman and a five-month-old baby were killed.

Both paramedics have been suspended and a full-scale investigation into the cause of the accident is already been conducted.

According to the Ekurhuleni metro, the woman did not have the authority to drive the ambulance as she had not undergone the standard metro training evaluation.
