Man arrested by flying squad linked to multiple crimes

“Two suspects were pulled over in the vehicle and arrested on the scene close to Carnival City.”

A suspected hijacker, arrested by members of the Benoni Flying Squad in Brakpan last week, has been linked to a string of serious crimes, from house robbery to motor vehicle theft.

The man and a suspected accomplice were nabbed along Heidelberg Road (R23) on Thursday at about 10pm by the squad members in a joint operation with Cartrack.

“WO Riaan Nel and Sgt Nick Muller were in search of a white Hyundai Accent, which was hijacked earlier on a Tembisa South case,” said WO Grant Giblin, communication officer for the Benoni Flying Squad.

“Two suspects were pulled over in the vehicle and arrested on the scene close to Carnival City.

“According to information, the woman driver was hijacked in Tembisa by two suspects who then drove around with her and picked up another two males.

“They later dropped her off in the Norkem Park area (Kempton Park) where she managed to alert the SAPS.”

Giblin told the Herald that upon further investigation at Brakpan SAPS, it was discovered that one of the arrested suspects was linked to numerous cases ranging from possession of stolen goods and motor vehicles, theft of vehicles, house robberies and carjacking going as far back as 2008 up until January 2019.

He added that investigations continue in all cases.

The suspects, aged 31 and 42, face charges of possession of hijacked motor vehicle.
