Brakpan crime stats show less general crime, but murder is up

The numbers showed a decline in almost all other offences.

The number of murders committed in Brakpan has almost doubled, according to the latest crime statistics released by the SAPS on Thursday.

Compared with the previous year’s statistics, the latest figures, from April 2018 to March this year, show the rate has almost doubled from last year’s 12 cases to 21.

There is good news, however, and the numbers showed a decline in almost all other offences.

The full statistics are as follows:

Contact crimes (crimes against a person):

• Murder increased by 75 per cent from 12 cases the previous year to 21

• Sexual offences decreased by 18.6 per cent from 70 to 57

• Attempted murder decreased by 11.1 per cent from 18 to 16

• Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm decreased by 13.3 per cent from 98 to 85

• Common assault remained the same at 317 cases

• Common robbery decreased by 10.8 per cent from 83 to 74

• Robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased by 29.2 per cent from 346 to 245

Sexual offences:

• Rape decreased by 22.5 per cent from 40 cases the previous year to 31

• Sexual assault remained the same at 26 cases

• Attempted sexual assault decreased from one case to none

• Contact sexual offences decreased from three cases to none.

Subcategories of aggravated robbery:

• Carjacking decreased by 16.7 per cent from 60 cases the previous year to 50

• Truck hijacking decreased by 25 per cent from four to three

• Robbery of cash in transit vehicle decreased by two cases to none

• Bank robbery remained the same and no cases were reported

• Robbery at residential premises decreased by 27.7 per cent from 47 to 34

• Robbery at non-residential premises decreased by 36.4 per cent from 88 to 56

Contact-related crimes:

• Arson decreased by 71.4 per cent from seven cases the previous year to two

• Malicious damage to property decreased by 28.2 per cent from 252 to 181

Property-related crimes:

• Burglary at non-residential premises decreased by 19 per cent from 184 cases the previous year to 149

• Burglary at residential premises decreased by 6.6 per cent from 560 to 523

• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle decreased by 29.7 per cent from 306 to 215

• Theft out of or from motor vehicle decreased by 19.6 per cent from 341 to 274

• Stock theft decreased by 22.2 per cent from nine to seven

Other serious crimes:

• All theft not mentioned elsewhere decreased by 19 per cent from 957 cases the previous year to 775

• Commercial crime decreased by 4.3 per cent from 232 to 222

• Shoplifting increased by 15.5 per cent from 174 to 201

Crime detected as a result of police action:

• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition decreased by 15.4 per cent from 39 cases the previous year to 33

• Drug-related crime increased by 2.1 per cent from 331 to 338

• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs decreased by 43.7 per cent from 261 to 147

• Sexual offences detected as a result of police action decreased from one case to none.
