Help comes too late for emaciated dog

"It is rather unfortunate that the owners were more concerned about being reported than the welfare of the animal they undertook to care for."

The Brakpan SPCA has warned pet owners they are lawfully required to procure or render veterinary treatment for every animal in their possession when it is needed.

This follows an incident on Tuesday, last week, where the local society obtained a warrant of search and seizure from the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court for the immediate removal of a miniature pinscher type dog from a premises in Victoria Avenue.

The dog was emaciated and denied veterinary treatment.

“The owners of the dog failed to cooperate with our cadet inspector the day prior, and proceeded to verbally abuse and insult him, whilst he attempted to conduct his investigation,” said Brakpan SPCA manager Insp Shiven Bodasing.

“It is rather unfortunate that the owners were more concerned about being reported than the welfare of the animal they undertook to care for.”

Bodasing told the Herald the dog was taken to a veterinarian and died the same evening.

“From the veterinary report, the doctors indicate the animal was indeed emaciated and that it suffered from severe hepatitis and secondary peritonitis (inflammation of the membrane lining the abdominal wall),” said Bodasing.

“The animal undeniably suffered whilst in the custody of the owners and as such, the inspectorate will be laying criminal charges against the owners, in respect of the Animals Protection Act no 71 of 1962.”

“We must again urge the public to consider the consequences of their actions, including their failure to act.”
