City manager honours women in uniform and encourages them to study further

Mashazi elaborated on her main vision for the city during her tenure as being to see women in all departments rise to leadership positions.

Issuing traffic fines, responding to life-threatening emergencies and dealing with hazardous fires are some of the key tasks executed by women in uniform daily.

To honour and recognise these women, Ekurhuleni city manager Dr Imogen Mashazi kick-started Women’s Month by recognising them for their amazing work.

On Thursday last week, Mashazi hosted the city’s Women in Uniform Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony at the Alberton Civic Centre.

The awards were a token of appreciation and encouragement to the women to keep up their work and do better in any area of work where they are afforded an opportunity to serve.

Jemina Bopape (41), from Brakpan, works for the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD).

She stood out from the rest when the city manager awarded her an accolade for Best Academic Achiever for her MBA from Regenesys Business School, which she obtained in 2015.

Bopape has worked for the city for 14 years and says her passion for her work stems from the impact she makes, especially when providing protection services to the city’s executive and management.

Currently, she is working for the EMPD’s VIP Protection Unit.

“I’m very humbled by this award. I have worked so long in this department and I never thought I would one day be recognised and honoured in such a befitting manner and ceremoniously,” she said.

“I’m very happy and I will keep on performing my duties to the best of my abilities.”

Mashazi said that her main vision for the city during her tenure is to see women in all departments rise to leadership positions.

She therefore encouraged women to study further and take advantage of the city’s employee bursary fund to equip themselves academically.

Mashazi holds a master’s degree as well as a doctorate in nursing science from the University of South Africa.

She is the first female city manager of a metro municipality in Gauteng.
