DEMS spends 67 minutes for Mandela making a difference

“Tears of joy rolled down the cheeks after each one was given shoes, hats, scarves and warm soup and bread to eat.”

The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) made Mandela Day a memorable one for three different organisations in the region.

Without compromising service delivery, staff from the Public Information Education and Relations (PIER) section and Disaster Management and Support Services, all dedicated their 67 minutes by giving food, clothes and other humanitarian aid to residents of the Tsakane Old Age Home, the Sunshine Association for the Disabled in Elsburg, Germiston, and the Bonolo Pelo Elderly Club at the Motsamai old clinic in Katlehong.

“The Tsakane Old Age Home was revamped by PIER and emergency services logistic officials whereby escape routes and safety signs were installed,”said William Ntladi, DEMS district manager media liaison.

“Fire extinguishers were re-mounted on the walls, globes were replaced and the entire building was cleaned.

“Lastly, vegetable seeds were planted.”

Support Services and Disaster Management, accompanied by their head of department, Sam Sibande, and four divisional heads, started their journey at the Sunshine Association for the Disabled.

The centre received toys, blankets, winter hats, scarves and food.

“The team left for Katlehong where they were met by songs of joy from a massive crowd of about 100 elders,” said Ntladi.

“They were more rejuvenated by the leadership who preached the gospel in between the speeches.
