Suspected cable thief shot after pointing gun at metro police

A loaded 9mm pistol was confiscated.

A suspected cable thief was shot and wounded during an incident with members of the EMPD Anti-Cable Theft Unit in Withok Estates on Thursday, last week.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the unit was investigating the recent theft of four lines of cable from the area when five men were seen digging and extending a trench, apparently intending to steal more cable.

“When the EMPD Anti-Cable Theft Unit members approached the suspects, one of them pointed a firearm at the officers,” said Kgasago.

“A member of the unit shot and wounded the suspect and the other four evaded arrest by running away.”

Part of the excavated trench from where the cable was removed.

A loaded 9mm pistol was confiscated and the wounded suspect was transported by ambulance to the nearest medical facility.

Various items used by the suspects, which included picks and shovels, were also seized and booked in at the Brakpan Police Station.

“The unit members registered charges of pointing a firearm, attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm, theft of cable and vandalising of municipal infrastructure against the suspect.

The arrested man, who is in his late 20s, will appear in court when he is fit to do so.
