Bogus traffic officers target motorists on R23

Victims are robbed of their vehicles after being pulled over by the phoney law enforcers.

Brakpan police have warned drivers to be on the lookout for hijackers masquerading as traffic officers along the R23 (Heidelberg Road).

According to Brakpan SAPS spokesperson Capt Pearl van Staad, the hijackers are dressed in metro police uniforms and are travelling in a white Volkswagen Golf 7.

Victims are robbed of their vehicles after being pulled over by the phoney law enforcers.

It was reported in the February 8 edition of the Herald’s “Weekend crime” how the driver of a brown Toyota Fortuner was hijacked by three men posing as officers, near Labore.

The victim was pulled over around 6pm on February 1 by the occupants of a white car with blue lights.

Once stopped, he was forced into the backseat of his vehicle at gunpoint and his hands were cable-tied.

He was driven to a secluded area and robbed of his cellphone, bank card and other belongings.

The victim was forced to tell the hijackers the PIN number for his bank card.

Two of the hijackers drove off in his car, while the third was left to guard over him.

The victim was then told to start walking and to not look back.

After walking some distance, he was rescued by police officers patrolling the area.

Van Staad told the Herald that numerous other cases have been reported, and advised motorists to be vigilant.

“If you suspect you are being pulled over by bogus officers, acknowledge that you saw them and indicate that they should follow you,” she said.

“Put your hazards on and drive to the nearest police station or public place.”
