Happy ending for stray dogs

Both were in need of medical treatment.

Christmas miracles really do happen – just ask two dogs with health problems brought into the Brakpan SPCA as strays over the festive season.

Cross-Jack Russell Oumie arrived at the society on December 8, scared and cowering in a corner.

“She wouldn’t eat, she wouldn’t drink and just shivered in fear,” said Sanette Bosman, chairperson of the Brakpan SPCA.

“Through the help and dedication of a committee member, she slowly started trusting again and received love and care.

“This was only the start of Oumie’s journey as she required medical attention as she was not in the best of shape.”

It was discovered that Oumie suffered from a ligament rupture in her leg, as well as an abscess in her mouth.

“In addition, at some point in her life, probably as a puppy, her tail had been docked and she was skittish of loud noises,” explained Bosman.

The little dog is about seven years old and the SPCA wasn’t going to give up on her.

Through the generosity and kindness of Ann Martin from ABC Steris, Paws in Motion Vet Clinic, donors and SPCA staff and the committee, Oumie went for surgery to correct all her medical issues.

Oumie went for surgery to correct all her medical issues and will be joining her new family soon.

“She is recovering well and loves life once again,” said Bosman, adding that Oumie has been adopted and will be joining her new family soon.

Another little miracle was Teddy, the one-eyed Pekingese.

“He desperately cried for his humans every day and is definitely a lap dog that simply adores cuddles,” said Bosman.

“We were disheartened to learn that he had a growth on his ear that would require surgical intervention.

“We were desperate; who would want to adopt a dog with one eye and an ear growth requiring surgery?”

Bosman told the Herald that not only did Teddy find a special family to spoil him, but his surgery to have the growth removed will be sponsored by Pekingese Haven.

He went to his new home for Christmas, but will return for his much-needed surgery later in January.
