Six killed on the roads in Brakpan over festive season

The special crime prevention enforcement was in place from December 1 until January 5.

The EMPD embarked on intensive crime prevention, traffic law enforcement during the festive season, as well as by-law enforcement operations at pre-identified hot spots in the whole of the City of Ekurhuleni.

According to the spokesperson of the EMPD, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, arrests totalling 987 suspects were effected which included 406 for miscellaneous crimes, 437 for drinking and driving, 40 for possession and dealing in narcotics, 108 for excessive speeding and 186 pedestrians for being on the freeways.

“A total of 47 road users perished on our freeways during the period, which included 13 drivers, three motorcyclists, 17 passengers, one cyclist and 14 pedestrians,” said Kgasago.

According to Kgasago, 13 vehicles were in single motor vehicle accidents, three in head-on collisions and three pedestrians were run over on the freeways.

“More than 70 per cent of the fatal collisions occurred between 10pm and 5am,” he added.

In Brakpan, six people lost their lives, including one driver, three passengers and one pedestrian.

No fatal accidents have been recorded since January 2.

A total of 13 972 motorists and pedestrians were stopped and searched and more than 25 000 spot summonses were issued.

Kgasago said that 33 stolen and hijacked vehicles were recovered, as well as three unlicensed firearms.

EMPD speed cameras also captured 108 071 vehicles for driving over the speed limit.

Narcotics in the form of crystal methamphetamine, Cat, Mandrax, dagga, ecstasy, nyaope and dagga valued at R982 000 were seized from 40 suspects.
