All White Gospel Picnic to pay tribute to gospel legend Vuyo Mokoena

At the height of his career, Mokoena was the front man for renowned multi-award winning Joyous Celebration.

Not only will fans be wowed by the sterling line-up of stars such as Khaya Mthethwa, Neyi Zimu and Ayanda Shange, but this year, for the first time, people can look forward to the newly added All White Gospel Picnic Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award’s debut will be marked with a tribute to esteemed gospel legend Vuyo Mokoena.

The All White Gospel Picnic will take place at Carnival City’s Festival Lawns on November 24.

Mokoena, a music icon who had a passion for gospel music, was born in Duduza and this year marks a decade since his death in 2008 after succumbing to a brain tumour.

He used his talent to preach the gospel of self-love, discipline and responsibility.

At the height of his career, Mokoena was the front man for renowned multi-award winning Joyous Celebration, widely considered the custodians of gospel music in Southern Africa.

There is no doubt that Mokoena’s uplifting vocal range, his formidable physical presence and energetic power enhanced the quality of the music and its impact on the psyche of his audience.

The Vuyo Mokoena Foundation and the All White Gospel Picnic will celebrate the highly gifted artist with an exclusive performance by spectacular soul sister Kholeka, accompanied by powerful vocalist Sipho Ngwenya and the same live band that use to perform with Mokoena.

Sipho Ngwenya.

“We are grateful there are people who want to celebrate Vuyo. Music nourished his soul and he would be extremely proud to hear two remarkable artists, Kholeka and Sipho, performing some of his greatest hits,” said Tebogo Mokoena, the wife of the late gospel maestro.

“I am a fan of their music and I know they will amaze fans with the tribute to Vuyo.”

The lifetime achievement award will be a permanent feature of the All White Gospel Picnic going forward.
