Stolen bakkie found at policeman’s home in Brakpan

The vehicle was tracked to a house in Dalpark Extension Six.

A police officer stationed at the Boksburg SAPS was arrested at his home in Brakpan yesterday (Thursday) for possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

The vehicle – a white Chevrolet bakkie – was stolen from an address in Petit, Benoni, on Wednesday evening.

“A flat screen television set and several electronic appliances were stolen and the intruders used the victim’s Chevrolet bakkie to load the loot,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

“On Thursday morning, the victim alerted Cartrack about the missing bakkie.

“Together with an EMPD Brakpan precinct officer, Cartrack personnel tracked the vehicle to a house in Dalpark Extension Six.

“A 26-year-old police officer at the house was arrested and SAPS forensics were summoned to the scene to lift fingerprints.”

According to Kgasago, the suspect claimed that a friend had called him at around 10pm on Wednesday and requested to park the bakkie at his house as he had no space to park the vehicle.

Kgasago added that Cartrack records revealed that the stolen vehicle was first parked at a location around Wadeville in Germiston.

The recovered vehicle was taken to the SAPS Van Ryn Deep Vehicle Pound in Benoni for further investigations and efforts to recover the stolen household goods are underway.

The arrested police officer was detained at the Brakpan Police Station and is expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court today.
