Police and security companies team up to combat crime in Brakpan

"It is high time we come together and make a difference."

In a meeting described as a “first of its kind” in Brakpan, local police and security companies and neighbourhood watch groups have committed to working together to rid the town of crime.

The meeting took place on Thursday, last week, at the Brakpan Police Station and saw station commander Brig Fredl Jonck make an impassioned plea to those in attendance to put business interests and competition aside for the betterment of the community.

It was attended by owners and representatives from the following companies and organisations: Dalpark Extension One Homeowners’ Association, Marrigorra Security Services, Puma Security, Spotter Owls Neighbourhood Watch, EC Security, Mall@Carnival, Bentel Group, AfriForum, Secure Tech Security, HPS Security, Minatlou Protection Services, Brakpan CPF, CP Security, Prosafe Security, Makopano Risk Solutions, Special Air Service Regiment, Brakpan Radio Group, National Security, CMS Security and EA24 Security.

Following a presentation on crime prevention and the principles of policing by Capt Chris Avenant, Jonck told the attendees he believed they could all work together.

“It is high time we come together and make a difference,” he said.

“There is a lot of politics in this town and we only talk to each when there’s a problem, but I want to show that if people stand together, a difference can be made.”

Attendees raised several concerns about a partnership with police, including the negative attitude of some SAPS members towards security personnel.

They also complained that certain security organisations are favoured by the SAPS, which caused mistrust and animosity amongst each other and with the police.

“From our side, we are going to change the attitude of our members to all of you,” said Jonck.

As for favouritism, the brigadier gave his assurance that it would immediately stop.

“If you feel that you are not getting support from us, you come and tell me,” he said.

After four hours, a consensus was reached with all in the room supporting Jonck’s plan towards a crime-free Brakpan and it was decided that an official channel of communication between all parties involved would be established.
