EMPD Equestrian Unit beefed up with extra personnel

The unit's current total complement is 15.

Three metro police officers became fully-fledged members of the EMPD Equestrian Unit following an intensive six-week basic course under the tutelage of Pro Equestrian in Fairleads, Benoni.

The three recruits, constables Goodness Nomkhosi, Velaphi Tshambane and Juan Pierre Vorster, gained their badges on Thursday, last week, at a ceremony held at the EMPD Equestrian Unit’s main office in Petit, Benoni.

The unit’s current total complement is 15, including three women.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the Equestrian Unit forms part of the EMPDs specialised units whose duties include patrolling designated areas on horseback, enforcing laws and providing crowd control to maintain public safety.

“They may also be involved with other duties such as search-and-rescue, traffic control and the pursuit of suspects,” he said.
