Making their 67 minutes count The town was abuzz with activity yesterday (Wednesday) as various events commemorating Mandela Day took place. Brakpan Herald July 19, 2018 Volunteers at the food packing challenge at Carnival City gave up their time to help keep Madiba's legacy alive. Izahn Krige, news editor of the Herald’s sister newspaper, The Springs Advertiser, rolled up her sleeves to pack meals for children in need at Carnival City. Carnival City hosted an international food packing challenge with Rise Against Hunger. The food packing drive at Carnival City was one of nine similar events that took place across the country, the goal of which was to pack three million meals in one day for children in need. Ken Lindsay (left), Kristin Bayasgalan and Francois Joubert kept the volunteers motivated as they were packing meal boxes. Personnel from the Apex Military Base in Dalview were on hand to do the heavy lifting at the food packing drive at Carnival City. Gunner Innocent Mkhabela was happy to spend 67 minutes helping others. Volunteers made hundreds of sandwiches during Mall@Carnival’s Spread the Love campaign in celebration of Mandela Day. The Life Dalview Hospital celebrated Mandela Day by handing out soup and bread topassers-by. Serving up warmth on the day are staff members (from left): Ivan Steenkamp(switchboard operator), Matthew Kanagan (IT systems controller), Lydia Rapetswa (maternitynurse), Erick Sebothoma (finance and admin manager), Leticia Fourie (nurse manager),Fikile Dlamini (unit manager medical ward), Carien van Rooyen (manager emergency unit)and Melanie Jansen van vuuren (infection prevention specialist).
